Cultural Diplomacy and Public Engagement in Tel Aviv

On October 15, the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Tel Aviv unveiled “Threads of Identity,” a specialized exhibition featuring the works of contemporary artist Yana Dereza. Attended by diplomatic representatives, including Embassy Minister-Counselor Hennadii Breskalenko, the event underscores the growing importance of soft power and public diplomacy in nurturing robust bilateral ties between Israel and Ukraine. The initiative highlights how cultural exchanges serve as effective platforms for mutual understanding and bilateral alignment.

Preserving Heritage and Symbolizing Resilience

Central to the exhibition is the artistic reimagining of the traditional Ukrainian motanka doll. Born in Kyiv in 1996 and relocated to Prague following the February 2022 Russian invasion, Dereza uses these symbolic figures to explore themes of historical memory, generational continuity, and national fortitude. By integrating ancestral motifs with modern artistic execution, the artwork projects a compelling narrative of perseverance that resonates with Israeli and international audiences alike.

Strategic Alignment and Civil Society Integration

Beyond its aesthetic value, the exhibition highlights the strategic function of cultural infrastructure in sustaining diaspora connections and promoting international civil solidarity within Israel. By facilitating open public access and narrative exchange, Tel Aviv continues to serve as an important hub for constructive international cooperation. These soft power initiatives strengthen baseline diplomatic channels and contribute to regional stability through shared socio-cultural values.
